HAP RECEIVES $875,000 FROM MDE TO OPERATE A COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER TO IMPROVE EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES FOR UNDERSERVED STUDENTS

Saint Paul, MN – Hmong American Partnership (HAP) has been awarded $875,000 from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) to serve 400 low-income Southeast Asian students and their families with academic and cultural afterschool programming to improve educational outcomes.
HAP’s Hmong Karen(ni) Youth Pride (HKYP) in partnership with the Community School of Excellence (CSE), a K-8 Hmong Charter School in Saint Paul, is receiving a three year grant through the Every Student Succeeds Act to operate a 21st Century Community Learning Center. HAP will focus on serving grades 4-8 in both afterschool and summer programs to increase reading and math scores for the students through hands on learning. HKYP has served over 8,000 students since its inception in 1998.
“Southeast Asian students, especially our Hmong, Karen and Karenni, are not graduating at the same rates as other students. This award will enable HAP to provide academic and cultural enrichment services that will significantly improve their performance,” – stated Bao Vang, President and CEO of HAP. These youth and their families are the future of Saint Paul, and we are pleased to work in partnership with CSE to provide wraparound services to help reduce educational disparities that impact their learning.
Since 2002, MDE has been administering the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program to provide students with enrichment activities outside of school hours. HAP’s 21st Century Community Learning Center will begin serving students on September 1, 2017
