Otto Bremer Foundation and Bremer Banks
The current economic crisis has left thousands of community members struggling to meet basic needs, such as food, housing and transportation. The Otto Bremer Foundation and the Bremer banks have teamed up to create the Bremer Emergency Fund to respond to the immediate economic challenges in our community.
Hmong American Partnership (HAP) is proud to have been selected as a grant recipient of the Bremer Emergency Fund. The $50,000 grant has enabled HAP to provide emergency financial assistance to families and individuals in Ramsey and Hennepin counties who are struggling to meet basic needs.
Because the Bremer Emergency Fund is designed to be a last resort, HAP first provides community members with information about other existing assistance programs. When these programs do not provide the individuals with sufficient support to cover their full need, they become eligible for the Bremer Emergency Fund. As of June 15th, HAP has distributed more than $20,000 in emergency funds to assist community members with rental assistance, mortgage assistance, and utility costs.
By making a commitment to some of our most vulnerable community members, the Otto Bremer Foundation and the Bremer banks are showing their strong commitment to our whole community. HAP knows from experience that individuals are able to more effectively plan for their future when they are not preoccupied with immediate concerns such as a lack of food or shelter. The Bremer Emergency Fund helps individuals and families stabilize their crisis situation so they can focus on accessing community programs that promote long-term stability and self-sufficiency. When fewer families are living in crisis, our whole community becomes healthier, safer and more engaged.
The Bremer Emergency Fund is a bold initiative of which HAP is proud to be a partner. It is our hope that the success of the Bremer Emergency Fund will encourage other community partners to follow suit and join together to address the emergency needs in our community.
